You receive good luck, wealth, etc. depending on the beckoning cat's color. This lucky white, tortoise-shell tabby (calico) holds an old koban coin worth senman ryou (10 million ryou).
A cat with its paw up as it cleans its leg looks like the Japanese palm-down beckoning (maneki) gesture (palm up is only for beckoning animals).
